They were built on the 10-foot wheelbase Steel "S" truck underframe and were the first cattle wagons to be fitted with automatic couplings from the time they were constructed but before these, there were two models using timber underframes and screw couplings.</span></p><p><span style="background-color: white; color: #444444; font-family: arial; font-size: 14px;"><br /></span></p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhsKWYMaxjgTAHpNPo_tEgiP-_vvKZwyAMa6y7v-k6UcFykMpjULc3Tqc80jz6IKDo4OPEhzO2YRWeluD-yJt41xPD6Hjf3a__2C-Y6EZ2iDp5ybEynsFJRVq7eRmDdow1KxIy08x8dOtdA-5ZnP1XHNWFEIxYzXopPAExIzSm_OCg1EsNRQS1E_C_f_g/s600/1948cwa.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="411" data-original-width="600" height="274" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhsKWYMaxjgTAHpNPo_tEgiP-_vvKZwyAMa6y7v-k6UcFykMpjULc3Tqc80jz6IKDo4OPEhzO2YRWeluD-yJt41xPD6Hjf3a__2C-Y6EZ2iDp5ybEynsFJRVq7eRmDdow1KxIy08x8dOtdA-5ZnP1XHNWFEIxYzXopPAExIzSm_OCg1EsNRQS1E_C_f_g/w400-h274/1948cwa.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: arial;"><br /></span></div><span style="background-color: white; color: #444444; font-family: helvetica; font-size: 14px;">In an attempt to inject a little texture into trains it was decided to custom manufacture the 1915 and 1921 models. Looking back it was a bit light but as I was going to be transported weight was an issue but not so now. This will be replaced with 4 sheets of 1830 x 900 x 3 MDF that will be painted both sides as will the frame,</span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;">The No 1 module is in worse shape and I have not had the courage to remove the plastic and that will be for another day.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;">The scenery, however, help up well as did the ply frame so the goal will be to finish the bridge and install it and then rework the scenery to a decent standard.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;">The steel rail had rusted and was rubbed back with a series of wet and dry papers using WD40 as the lubricant. The track in the scenery is all that can be observed at this time as needs repair visually. Lookin at it again it does indeed follow the Geoff Knott theory of modelling <b><i>"Scenery disturbed by the minimum amount of track"</i></b></span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;">So Have Fun I am trying</span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;"><br /></span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;"><br /></span><span style="font-family: arial;"></span></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; font-size: medium;">"Less can be much much more"</span></b></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;">In practice, every element from the track up has to be distilled making it visually larger and this is what a steam generator provides visual intensity. </span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;">This idea was originally developed by TRS Trains in England and I would have a look at their Facebook site for more details. Smoke was one idea that I had originally used traditional smoke oil and I even have a number of generators that now will have to be assigned to the 40 class as the sole representative of the diesel class.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;">Smoke on the water is just that, oil smoke and it's known that prolonged use can coat models with an oily residue, I have had no proof but it was a concern. Oil smoke also has a heavy look but after reviewing the TRS product, water seems to address any </span><span style="font-family: arial;">issue of residue and the visual is nearly perfect with oil smoke consigned to diesel.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;"><br /></span><span style="font-family: arial;"></span></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: arial;"><iframe allowfullscreen="" class="BLOG_video_class" height="347" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/B-2242lTMJ8" width="417" youtube-src-id="B-2242lTMJ8"></iframe></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: arial;"><br /></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: arial;"><b>TRS undertakes install of Sound and Smoke in the UK only</b></span></div><p></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;"><br /></span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;">My first move was to purchase a moisturiser spray from eBay and disassemble it, what was found was it could be used by reorganizing to achieve the task. By nature and training, I am forced to create the best product that I can so after</span><span style="font-family: arial;"> a period of design and parts research. A high-frequency oscillator and voltage regulator were selected to provide smoke and fixed voltage for fans controlled by the ESU decoder. </span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;">How to provide power for the oscillator was the next question as testing had shown that it drew 0.15 amps and you have to allow twice this for inrush. A decision was made to power it directly from the track requiring a separate 5VDC output with an AC/DC inverter to convert the DCC to DC. </span><span style="font-family: arial;">After testing a number of prototypes a single power box evolved as a means to marchell all the parts for assembly and prewired before integration with a decoder. An underlying reason was if powered from a decoder function it may/could create a heavy load on the stay alive and negate its value to the decoder.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;">This regulator could be replaced with resistors of the correct value but the power pack will not shrink due to the capacitor size, a smaller capacitor would help but I am not sure what the power would look like, so the decision was to play safe, in the name of success. In conclusion, a regulated power supply is stable regardless of track voltage so the value is one of balance.</span></p><h2 style="text-align: center;"><span style="color: red; font-family: georgia;">"One flash it will be ash"</span></h2><p></p><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi0c0Q7T_VOvbXlzMIAOq3sxEBLbh-thT5Bud5SLL7YKgogg6eP9TGl9npvb-PhvJyGYqdy0qg_wdGSSmutQki_IdVdEG3uqUbhUUE9LvI0WpkdGxlA5rCq1YVXg-qmFIYTMv0klJ_EusKr/s800/IMG_20211104_141724A.jpg" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="575" data-original-width="800" height="288" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi0c0Q7T_VOvbXlzMIAOq3sxEBLbh-thT5Bud5SLL7YKgogg6eP9TGl9npvb-PhvJyGYqdy0qg_wdGSSmutQki_IdVdEG3uqUbhUUE9LvI0WpkdGxlA5rCq1YVXg-qmFIYTMv0klJ_EusKr/w400-h288/IMG_20211104_141724A.jpg" width="400" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><br /><span style="font-family: verdana;"><b>Oscillator Power Supply<br />50 wide x 46 long x 16 high</b></span></td></tr></tbody></table><p></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;">In parallel to this, a means of storing water was developed combined with an oscillator head to mount the oscillator, two fans with one for chuff and the other for blowdown. </span><span style="font-family: arial;">Two 15 mm square computer fans were selected, sourced and check fitted onto a prototype head designed for this task. In real life, couplers are a manual task and would it not be nice to replace that?</span></div><div><span style="font-family: arial;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-family: arial;">In a previous blog Sound Car, a strategy was outlined for operational sound, so couplers are next with the common link a magnet. When using a Soundtracks Sound Car, a magnetic must be used to consist of the decoders, so using it to operate the couplers would be an operational linkage.</span></div><div><span style="font-family: arial;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-family: arial;">Magnetically operated couplers [# PC-1075] are available from <a href="https://www.protocraft.com/" target="_blank">Protocraft</a> in the USA and are assembled but based on the US prototype but meets my theatrical philosophy.</span></div><div><span style="font-family: arial;"><br /></span></div><div><br /></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjOETsvtxnLpqXdpmwLZ8sez_V97fx7SNBYC47jMfYi8qiraaFhL6Q0nW4cNqrEVKER24i1loeZ2R-dIjGG15pUKsHtIB0u39RKpY0WRv_2vSCfTb1ZtkYjEiVb3fsM334LNrGs_46Ji8aM/s582/protocraft+1.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="582" data-original-width="575" height="398" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjOETsvtxnLpqXdpmwLZ8sez_V97fx7SNBYC47jMfYi8qiraaFhL6Q0nW4cNqrEVKER24i1loeZ2R-dIjGG15pUKsHtIB0u39RKpY0WRv_2vSCfTb1ZtkYjEiVb3fsM334LNrGs_46Ji8aM/w393-h398/protocraft+1.jpg" width="393" /></a></div><br /><span style="font-family: arial;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-family: arial;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-family: arial;">The first problem was integrating them into the rolling stock currently at my disposal. The first issue was coupler location and height that was addressed in a much earlier blog on <b><a href="https://modelfxs.blogspot.com/search/label/Couplers" target="_blank">couplers</a></b> and their installation. </span><span style="font-family: arial;">The original couplers had a much smaller footprint than the Protocraft couplers so a complete rework was required.</span></div><div><span style="font-family: arial;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-family: arial;">The LCH were rebuilt as outlined in Vlog #1 with the coupler having specific issues requiring a large amount of styrene strip to pack them onto the center line of the car at the correct height. In conjunction with the 32 Class locomotive tender, a new coupler standard was now created that required modifications on the S, K and RU wagons, so the ruler was out.</span></div><div><span style="font-family: arial;"><br /></span></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjV8H-WpJ8wWP1XvYVB5hzDWhc61-vmu2mXLbh42BnnddZMkxbRYq9RUCRnWnZKKPADATRl1HUJHX72F1qVfmCK6oaoFdDoGvmvYuCyh5aJdcAnOfMmJTln1TZDFbD_mS6y6q6hRP1eh8Tn/s1069/swagon_elev-1.png" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="470" data-original-width="1069" height="251" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjV8H-WpJ8wWP1XvYVB5hzDWhc61-vmu2mXLbh42BnnddZMkxbRYq9RUCRnWnZKKPADATRl1HUJHX72F1qVfmCK6oaoFdDoGvmvYuCyh5aJdcAnOfMmJTln1TZDFbD_mS6y6q6hRP1eh8Tn/w570-h251/swagon_elev-1.png" width="570" /></a></div><br /><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj-VVLBGfEnjU_9lFa83nWGMh8XiBNNrDjWqiusLddX0mh3Uj0lDFN_PmVWKH6tC-pVQmHDdeMCQmko5KCbCK8XaswbVsD60GDHqyzCwqmLkuKKPZDoRfaqweZLtAJG0tzcW3k6TG3qUeq7/s320/swagon_elev.png" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="260" data-original-width="320" height="260" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj-VVLBGfEnjU_9lFa83nWGMh8XiBNNrDjWqiusLddX0mh3Uj0lDFN_PmVWKH6tC-pVQmHDdeMCQmko5KCbCK8XaswbVsD60GDHqyzCwqmLkuKKPZDoRfaqweZLtAJG0tzcW3k6TG3qUeq7/s0/swagon_elev.png" width="320" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><b><span style="font-family: verdana;"><br />Knuckle centerline from the top rail</span></b></td></tr></tbody></table><br /><span style="font-family: arial;"><br /></span></div><div><br /></div><div><div><span style="font-family: arial;">The first to be modified was a Waratah S wagon, after a lot of measuring, it was decided to start with modifying the pocket to suit a ProtoCraft coupler pocket. This required removing all the cast-on details for the coupler details plus all the coupler base to the deck floor. This is messy and slow and would best be done with a small milling machine before assembly as it was difficult on an assembled car. </span></div><div><span style="font-family: arial;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-family: arial;">Lacking this, the Ozito battery-operated motor tool fitted with a Dremel rotary cutter was a good backstop and this was covered in Vlog #2. </span></div><div><span style="font-family: arial;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-family: arial;">The next task was to dress the modified ProtoCraft pocket then install a styrene strip and 2.5 mm angle on the sides of the pocket to blend it into the car. </span><span style="font-family: arial;">Finally, a 0.25'' wide styrene strip was used to pack the pocket to its final height and if doing it have 0.010''/0.015''/0.020''/0.030'' x 0.25'' on the workbench for this task.</span></div><div><span style="font-family: arial;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-family: arial;">The knuckle on the couplers is 5.6 mm wide so a 1mm +/- will be acceptable but with most of the cars at this time they are half that,</span></div><div><span style="font-family: arial;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-family: arial;">With this done the RU was modified and required similar modifications to the S with the K wagon being more straightforward with just the opening modified to suit the new couplers. Also, I have a 5000 gallon Tanker wagon and this was a lot of work requiring custom printed parts to integrate the couplers.</span></div><div><span style="font-family: arial;"><br /></span></div><div><br /></div><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: left; A</span><span style="font-family: arial;">lso if using magnetically operated couplers the wand has a dual purpose to open and close the couplers and operate the consisting of the train.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;">One advantage of these decoders as they use voltage to determine the speed of the wheels, while a disadvantage in a locomotive there is no requirement for a motor to supply the necessary feedback. Synchronization is not important so any disadvantage of this methodology is not apparent, overall a win-win</span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;">The car shown is a Waratah S wagon that was built to the manufacturer's instructions. A small amount of urethane was removed to facilitate the decoder and stay alive installation. If you wanted to do more than one this preparation would be best done before installing the wheels.</span></p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiYqmWhssHnURgfxPpGy2uFfL1qGwY6ZEgxxLtn6Z3BxbZgMCEoxG9HimStEBq2E72cw-U92lUY8CkYHboGgvmzHTmiRvmuXrstO8aMB0cEsmIBt2Bf7YMNZCDtjztyCotDNAJWU5FfJ07j/s2048/IMG_20210901_144711.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1536" data-original-width="2048" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiYqmWhssHnURgfxPpGy2uFfL1qGwY6ZEgxxLtn6Z3BxbZgMCEoxG9HimStEBq2E72cw-U92lUY8CkYHboGgvmzHTmiRvmuXrstO8aMB0cEsmIBt2Bf7YMNZCDtjztyCotDNAJWU5FfJ07j/w640-h480/IMG_20210901_144711.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><b><span style="font-family: verdana;">SoundCar decoder located at the top</span></b></div><div style="text-align: center;"><b><span style="font-family: verdana;">Stay Alive beside the air cylinder</span></b></div><div style="text-align: center;"><b><span style="font-family: verdana;">Pickups located on left</span></b></div><div style="text-align: center;"><b><span style="font-family: verdana;">Tripod mount on the right</span></b></div><p></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;">Both the decoder and stay alive had their insulation removed to reduce their profile from the viewed area but the underside will make a purist be apoplectic but in the end, it's modelling theatre and here sound adds so much to the theatre. </span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;">Pickups were manufactured using 0.015'' phosphor bronze wire soldered onto copper-clad PCB which was pinned/glued to the frame and necessitated a stay-alive be installed.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;">This car is also equipped with a trialled tripod suspension system yielding a practical solution to the levelling of 4 wheel rolling stock. <span style="font-family: arial;"><span face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">The prototype was measured on a field trip and a 3D model was produced shown in the rendering above. There use is discussed in detail in a previous article on <b><a href="http://modelfxs.blogspot.com.au/search/label/Research" target="_blank">Rabbit Traps</a></b>. The model was rapid prototypical and cast in urethane by Peter Boorman Models in Queensland. The urethane castings where assembled into the completed model shown then painted in weathered concrete, washed to age of 30 years. One complete assembly is fitted at each side of the embankment.</span><br />
<span face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif"><br /></span>
<span face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">No information can be found at this time on the beams that supported the rail except that they were mostly likely steel. The problem is how was the rail fixed and at this point a educated guess is applied in the form of clamps. This form of construction would allow the beams to be completely fabricated off site, fit to any rail and allow replacement of worn sections, so for now this is how it is modeled until better information becomes available.</span></span><br />

This took a lot more time than you would expect. T</span><span style="font-family: arial;">he primary reason was that the original software that I had used was dropped by AutoDesk and I could not afford the upgrade to Inventor. There was a problem with the 40 Class kits and I had to address that in between the other major project that I have.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;">That was a long exercise as no one in Australia could do it and I finally found someone located in Russia and engaged him to salvage as much as he could. Finally decided on Albire Professional 3D Software or what I call Solidworks Light, getting a licence for a heavy discount for marketing reasons helped, still $650 a year but it works well and has excellent constraining for assemblies.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;">The files were finally rescued and sent back in SAT format and at least they could be loaded. The final issue was that it took me 3 plus months to even get my mind in the right place with the software</span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;">This is the backstory, but I missed the tank assembly had some parts but not the tank.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;">After a lot of work, a new tank was generated for the 20000 gallons and finished this is where someone showed a picture of a 10000 gallon and yes it looked better, back to the grind and this is the final result. It is not a museum piece just layout quality like the PC2 Station which can be handled and still have one part at the end of the day. It has no prototype just a collection of parts with the arrangement based on general structural knowledge and what is available.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;">Most of the major parts will be 3D printed with the frame Evergreen Styrene. The spout may be either plastic or brass castings depending on success with the latter.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;">The images are of the model, not a scale drawing so all sizes are of the materials used and the compromises made for the manufacture of one-offs.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;"><br /></span></p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; Now, this had all been looked at by myself, but there were always a number of reservations on my part, with the main one being the use of oil. A mussed-up fill could result in a real mess as would a serious derailment. The other issue was the reported build-up of oil from a lot of use in a layout environment.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;">After noting my objections I was directed to a Facebook page of a UK engine using water so the question was how with t</span><span style="font-family: arial;">he most obvious answer a small ultrasonic generator, my curiosity was pricked.</span></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><iframe allowfullscreen="" class="BLOG_video_class" height="442" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/8vVzck74Bi4" width="532" youtube-src-id="8vVzck74Bi4"></iframe></div><br /><p style="text-align: center;"><br /></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;">So after a few days of research, I obtained a sample to destroy and then decided to see if it could be possible to have stack and cylinder cocks. with the hardware that is required to be installed.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;">The renders below show the current results. </span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;">The smokebox is a Model O - 50 Class and it would all seem to fit, so all the parts were sourced and the next step will be undertaken once I have enough parts and a new printer. The parts will have to be a combination of FDM and resin depending on size. The larger parts at this time will be FDM ABS to allow them to be glued into a solid assembly.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;"><br /></span></p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhiSC4DRJc7cFhvpdCCRUp-JMlKwT4vrxPtCGklE7BQW_kSSLsp5cl5fhabvcwYVS3dY58WzLUcl7lgHr8RRF1vqRzIlHmvUx_Xx1hxetRcP4fyqBxz_44JTDSqQ-lk7nmh3yXOwaOLwoh5/s1680/50+CLASS+a.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="875" data-original-width="1680" height="269" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhiSC4DRJc7cFhvpdCCRUp-JMlKwT4vrxPtCGklE7BQW_kSSLsp5cl5fhabvcwYVS3dY58WzLUcl7lgHr8RRF1vqRzIlHmvUx_Xx1hxetRcP4fyqBxz_44JTDSqQ-lk7nmh3yXOwaOLwoh5/w516-h269/50+CLASS+a.jpg" width="516" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: verdana;"><b>Section through Smokebox showing collector hoods</b></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg90EUlxdYrIpZnMvALx1IhuhBZYU4sxapo-z0IEHWciuSpTl4Pwy-ZUNHWx10Iv5aGyyRDu4fJ8I-EIB8MuJP011bIZMtUvbov46JjOFnNaxT5W1r2D4F3cdnlhv8Q_80BIJfU9r8OS9RL/s1680/50+CLASS.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="875" data-original-width="1680" height="263" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg90EUlxdYrIpZnMvALx1IhuhBZYU4sxapo-z0IEHWciuSpTl4Pwy-ZUNHWx10Iv5aGyyRDu4fJ8I-EIB8MuJP011bIZMtUvbov46JjOFnNaxT5W1r2D4F3cdnlhv8Q_80BIJfU9r8OS9RL/w503-h263/50+CLASS.jpg" width="503" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: verdana;"><b><br /></b></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: verdana;"><b>Overall view with Smokebox transparent</b></span></div><span style="font-family: arial;"><br /></span><p></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;"><br /></span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;">This will be feed from a tank in the tender this is where one of the issues arises but in principle, it looks like a 50/50 chance but the use of water is appealing.</span></p><p style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://www.facebook.com/trs.trains/videos/1046146729547224/?__cft__[0]=AZXm9HgTsRVBUyy6YKYprpMQIyKL6kF5vKMOQ-laRLDrB5_yJPvtoSuZzsVlpuRRZ48NzN_eop-20id8DYI2YiwVzulbbxiXrCX8sxY5ad1jP4QVyRg-dyPpobVY-XtoqJ4GxWHgANvmErP_b5YmtcenXcIbcpmE35I79CFNG1y7lg&__tn__=%2B%3FFH-R" target="_blank"><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: medium;">Steam Loco with Sound & Steam</span></a><br /></p><h4 style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: arial;">If you really want one these are the people in the UK who have it all </span></h4><h4 style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: arial;">sorted its worth a look <a href=" www.facebook.com/trs.trains/" target="_blank">Click here</a></span></h4><p><span style="font-family: arial;"><br /></span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;"><br /></span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;"><br /></span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;"><br /></span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;"><br /></span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;"><br /></span></p><p><br /></p><p><br /></p><p><br /></p>Tucanohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07958655520829249740noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2005682214798625075.post-43003384730625203822015-03-29T18:48:00.000-07:002015-03-30T03:58:28.798-07:00New Direction - Stage 2<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">This stage is the biggest change to the </span><b style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><a href="http://modelfxs.blogspot.com.au/2012/11/the-layout.html" target="_blank">original design</a></b><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"> to accommodate the charge of direction outlined in the previous blog on Stage 1. The major change is the inclusion of the Spicers Creek passing loop that was not going to be modeled and the moving of Drill Creek to the opposite wall</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The other change not shown is moving the staging to the courtyard and this will be discussed in detail later. But in principle will involve the use of two four [4] meter staging yards mounted on lifting trolleys mounted on 40 mm od pivots. This will be outline latter but to say the availability of cheap workshop lifting equipment from China had made this idea possible.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><b>Spicer's Creek Loop</b></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">A previous blog on <b><a href="http://modelfxs.blogspot.com.au/2014/06/spicers-creek-station.html" target="_blank">Spicer's Creek</a> </b>showed snap shoots of the station diagram. The design only creates a basic loop only. A cut down cattle pens will be included along with locomotive watering and a PC1 shelter. This will be cut from a ModelFxs PC2 station that will be combined with another to create a AC4 station for Goombla. To operate a steam era layout of the 1960's loop sidings are critical to achieve practical operation.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><b>Drill Creek</b></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Drill Creek has incorporated the lot PC2 Station, Watering, Cattle Pen, Loading Bank and SO8 Grain Silo. The line will exit to staging at MaryVale through the wall of the garage.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><b>Goombla</b></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The design of <b><a href="http://modelfxs.blogspot.com.au/2015/03/new-direction.html" target="_blank">Goombla</a></b> was outlined in the previous blog the most important part of the new design. The train will enter from external staging representing Golgong using a narrow shelf that is just scenery. The entrance will be hidden using row's of heavy foliage as was the exit from the original Spicer's Creek Modules. It has been carried to the front edge of the Spicers Creek Station Module to help operators feel that these modules are extension visually of that module.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><b>Joining Stages</b></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The loops that join all the modules at the rear are also external and located between the rear fence and wall of the shed. This is lost space that is never used and helps save precious space to allow a series separate scenes [stages] to existing in their own right. In modeling curves are extremely difficult to scenic and serve to define the distance between any two scenes creating a real sense of small distances between model areas and are best done away with.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>

The arrival of the Garrett from Model O has caused a slight change for the layouts final design concept.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><b>Stage 1 - A new start</b></span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">After a recent visit to<b><a href="http://modelfxs.blogspot.com.au/2013/05/goomla.html" target="_blank"> Goombla</a></b> to show my wife the source of all the crazy stuff the decision was made to construct this as the next scene for the railroad after completing the last module for Spicer's Creek. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">This was partly a result of discussions with the Geoff and Ben Small about AD60 Garrett's and the emotional stimulation it would create in O scale. </span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">That discussion lead to talk about the </span><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/W44_Concentrate_Train" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;" target="_blank">W44 Concentrate Train</a><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"> that was moved over the western mountains by the AD60 Garrett's. This route required many changes of locomotives and double heading and this lead to the talk of <b>"</b></span><span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-style: italic; font-weight: bold;">What if the Mary Vale to Golgong line had been completed ?" </span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">as o</span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">ne of the reasons for building the Mary Vale extension was its direct access to the ports in Newcastle while offering superior grades, so it is logical any dispatcher would route its traffic using this route.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">With Model O release of the ore cars my fate was sealed we had to run the ore train so it was back to the drawing board [CAD System]. The recent attendance at the AUS 7 march convention lead to thinking about a new design.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The actual design popped into my head in my sleep that night and was still there the next day.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Stage 1 is no real change other that deciding to build Goombla module over Drill Creek but the real change is in the Stage 2 that may or may not be built.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Stage 1 shown below</span><br />

At the Epping Show with the two modules on display, I was offered some plans for the complete Spicers Creek Station. <span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The NSWGR Gantry Crane was found on many sidings within the system. The model was produced from the data sheet provided by <b><a href="http://grapevine.com.au/~datashet/index.html" target="_blank">Greg Edwards</a></b> detail using photos of the prototype located Merriwa. Additional detail photographs were sourced from Kerian Ryan Models showing a crane at Ardlethan from his range of <b><a href="http://www.krmodels.com.au/ardp_cds.html" target="_blank">Australian Railway Detail Photographs</a>.</b> The completed model is all brass, assembled, painted ready for installation and available in HO and O scale.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The reduction of sound produced by the layout track base itself has been a prime objective and the process outlined in the <b><a href="http://www.modelfxs.blogspot.com.au/2012/11/track-base.html" target="_blank">Track Base</a></b> article worked when reviewed by others at the state shown in the article and below. </span></div>

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">When the foam blocks used in the scenery were glued on both sides it was a different case. The noise of a piece of rolling stock was overpowering and something had changed. The open area under the road base was sealed by the scenery foam on two sides and the urethane foam base - a drum had been created. </span></div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The solution was found in using foam as it easily compressed to fill the cavity. Clarke Rubber stocks a 100 mm [4''] foam mattress and for a extra $10 it was cut into 150 mm [6''] strips. These are pushed into the cavity before the last scenery foam block is installed - problem solved. In any future construction this foam would be installed as part of the road base installation. </span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The off-cuts have been used to seal the smoke ducts, gaps in the scenery and as a signal base.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The scenery base used is styrene foam from <b><a href="http://www.aus-styrene.com.au/" target="_blank">Australian Urethane & Styrene</a></b> 150 mm thick. The foam is called MGDE by the supplier and was purchased in 1200 x 600 x 150 blocks and was selected as it is carve-able and is used for stage set manufacture. The use of 150 mm allows the scenery to be carved without encountering layers of glue required for laminates. The foam was fixed to the urethane foam deck using large dollops of Parfix Gap Sealer applied to the urethane foam deck [pale yellow in photo]</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Now that the Spicers Creek modules are assembled it's time to report on what worked and what didn't. Overall the finished result met the design criteria laid out in the original <b><a href="http://modelfxs.blogspot.com.au/2012/11/module-design-construction.html" target="_blank">construction article</a></b> but like all designs there is room for improvement on the original concept. The original article has now been updated to reflect these changes.</span></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Structural Elements</span></b></div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">In this respect the combined elements are strong enough but each module must be fully assembled as there are no redundant components and each fulfills a specific roll in the structure of the module. The module should be assembled on a relatively flat surface as it will move on all axis's until all the parts are installed.</span></div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The design can be seen as two separate elements of a base board and the backdrop / roof. These base is formed by the lower leg of the former's which are located by installation of the stringers. A ply deck is fitted at the bottom with 2400 x 600 x 25 urethane fitted to the top side, these prevent lateral movement while the front and rear fascias provide the load carrying beams for the structure. The lower deck is cut out to allow access to the structure for wiring the layout while the upper deck provides the mounting face for the 600 x 1220 x 150 foam scenery blocks. The combination of the decks and stringers provide the torsional [twisting] resistance required by a base deck. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The skeleton of former's is placed temporally on two 90 x 40 x 3800 runners clamped to on two saw horses. Align the deck former's by fitting the stringers, fit the upper an lower decks to the former's and allow adhesives to dry. Finally fit the front and rear fascias - again glued and screwed to the stringers holding the former's in position. </span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The track base can be added now or later in the process but cutouts for the risers must be provided in the top deck.</span></div>
</div>

<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Issues</span></b></div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The former's do need a 40 or 50 mm x 3 mm ply glued to there faces for the styrene to be fitted too as the 12 mm former;'s provide a narrow gluing face for the styrene which tended to hog the plastic around the rib. A wider face should resist that while providing a larger attachment for the styrene that would be less critical at assembly. The styrene should be fitted in one piece from the base to the roof fascia to create vertical joints only. On the Spicers creek module it was laid along the frame creating vertical and horizontal joints</span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"> to create just more work.</span></div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Modules should be designed in 1200 increments as the styrene is supplied in nominal 1220 wide sheets so you could use 1223 - 1224 spacing to avoid cutting. The styrene sheet should be increased to 2 mm or the ribs closed up to 460 mm from the 600 used on the Spicers Creek Module</span></div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Leave gaps between sheets of about 3 mm this makes for a stronger joint. Joints were sanded with a orbital sander and 80 grit paper. All gaps were filled using Parfix Gap Filler. This is applied with a 200 wide blade dipped in water to obtain the smoothest possible joint and the edges wiped with a damp sponge to feather them in. If you allow to to dry for 48 hours and sand gently the orbital sander can be used..</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">All joints should be joined using a scrap timber along the full length of the joint to ensure a clean joint ant the stringers and former's. This backing piece should be covered on the glue side with the brown packing tape to provide a glue release. During construction it was discovered that the best solvent [adhesive] is lacquer thinners for the HIPS plastic. Just apply with a brush along the seam and capillary action completes the tack. This is the only effective jointing method that has been found and also allow repairs using a backing piece for any cracks.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /><b>Handling</b></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Each module is fitted with 65 mm o.d. swivel wheels so when they are moved you simply push the module into the venue extend the legs, add power and operate. These are a must with each module being 1350 wide x 1250 high x 3800 long and weighing 80 kg. This makes the movement a simple task for one man.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /><b>Conclusion</b></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Did it all work - well, yes. The assembly is strong, dose not twist and is awkward to handle but with the integrated handling hardware it is manageable by two people.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Would I do it another way - no it meets my needs!</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Each of the major points on the Spicers Creek module were identified for the benefit of the viewers. This allows people to put a name to the scenes we chose to model but keep to ourselves.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Would anyone duplicate these modules, it is doubtful as they were designed to fill a very specific need but there are elements of the design that may be useful in the design of other modules. </span></div>

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The selection of a backdrop method was made easier when Trevor Hodges posed his trials on his <b>Blog 7mm Aussie </b>on Word Press. The depth achieved is illustrated by the before and after photographs below which were copied from the Trevors blog with the article confirming the selection of photographic backdrops supplied by Haskell Models for Spicers Creek over any dreams of using painted backdrops. </span><br />

<b style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Mounting the backdrops.</b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The selected backdrop for the Spicier Creek is Barinore which will provide the best match to the tree line seen at Spicers Creek. </span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">These can be seen on MRRC web site -</span><a href="http://www.mrrc.com.au/general/haskell/barinore.html" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;" target="_blank"> click here</a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The backdrops are printed on self adhesive vinyl which can be applied directly to the cove incorporated into the module and if you use the sky supplied this would be quite acceptable. However the size of the cove and use of a painted sky precludes this and based on previous experience a backdrop looks at its best when a shadow line is created and this requires mounting on a backing. This has another benefit in that it allows the backdrop to be reused on another layout.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The best material for a backing is 5 mm foam core and when it was found that it was available in black the choice was made.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">To fit the vinyl place the foam core on a floor and start applying the vinyl by removing about 30 mm of the adhesive covering and fix to the foam core. Next slowly roll back the covering to expose another 30 - 50 mm of the backdrop and using the palm of the hand to rub it onto the foam backing. The backing is rolled up and it supports the exposed adhesive before application to the backing.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Stop ever 250 - 300 mm and rub the area to ensure complete contact with the backing and repeat the above.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Once complete, cut the backdrop free from the sheet and flip over to fit the spacers. These are cut from scrap foam core. The first one is about 100 wide and is used to join the two sheets into one assembly. Using a new sharp [dangerous] 25 mm wide box cutter blade remove the unwanted portion of the sky by cutting into the mountains on the backdrop. Based on experience smooth flowing cuts following the printed mountain profile looks the best. Attempts that try to follow the printed profile exactly seem to always end up looking fake. At the base 40 mm was left extending beyond the backdrop as this allows the scene position to be adjusted in the module to achieve the best visual integration.</span></div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">While the writer favors soldered connections it can be quite difficult when building a DCC power bus because of the need to expose the copper wire. This has lead to re-examining <b>'</b></span><i style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><b>Suitcase Connectors</b></i><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><b>'</b> or Insulation Displacement Connectors (IDC's) which allow connection of track feeder to main bus (power supply) wires without having to strip or solder. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">To connect these connectors simply place the crimp over the wires and close the cutter with a pair of pliers. The metal tab pierces the insulation and connects the wires together ensuring a reliable mechanical connection of both wires.</span></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />

The wire was purchased from the local electronics shop and is a Chinese wire so for the rest of the project wire from a reputable supplier will be sourced. </span><br />

<b style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></b><b style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Installation</b><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">All the electronic hardware is fitted into the module drawer to allow repairs and diagnostics to be undertaken from one central point</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Control uses a large amounts of wire as each circuit generally requires 2 cores. The use of 4 core alarm cable is the most practical</span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"> means to supply the necessary cores and organization. This module has had 100 meters of cable laid in in preparation to connect the systems outlined and for other single point effects such as windmill, smoke and environmental sounds to help create the dynamic sound as discussed on a previous article <b><a href="http://modelfxs.blogspot.com.au/2013/01/sound-control.html" target="_blank">sound control</a></b>. </span><br />

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><b>Personal Comment</b></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Will this all work? </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">We are getting closer to finding out and there its a fine line between success and ridicule.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">This is all a big unknown but as outlined at the start of this blog the writer believes there has never been a better time to try to create a <b>"</b><i style="font-weight: bold;">Theater for the Mind". </i>Not my words but a perfect description for what is being attempted - t</span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">ime is required for judgement.</span><br />
